So about a month ago I won a ridiculously large collection of records on ebay from a very nice woman on the Upper East Side for only $2.50. When I picked them up, she had them all meticulously packaged with handles in three separate boxes and had her doorman hail me a taxi. The next day she asked me if I ever DJ with them to make her a mix, which I agreed to for feeling like such a slimy bastard for practically stealing her record collection. I'm sending her a CD of this today.
I'm still getting used to mixing on vinyl, so there's a few weird things in this mix. But enjoy the crackle, the warmth, the bass, and most of all -- the totally inane lyrics.
"Don't Stop Till You Get Enough" - Michael Jackson
"If Ya Think I'm Sexy" - Rod Stewart
"Dance Wit Me" - Rick James
"No Room For Dancing" - The Fatback Band
"Queen for a Day" - Donna Summer
"Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel" - Tavares
"How's Your Love Life Baby" - Jackie Moore
"You Make My Dreams" - Hall & Oates
"Sometimes a Fantasy" - Billy Joel
"Too High" - Stevie Wonder
"Please Don't Stay (Once You Go Away)" - Marvin Gaye
Thank you Eileen for making this all possible!

I'd be lying if I said I've been a fan of Jay Reatard any longer than a year; I'd also be lying if I said a week went by in that year where I didn't listen to one of his songs. Creating a mix of Jay's music wasn't a difficult task, though I wish i had more of his material to put something together on the spot like I did here. Getting into his music reminded me of when I discovered the Pixies in high school. Literally every time I heard another song by that band I would think to myself....is this band for real? How could one band have so many accessibly great songs and not be a staple of mainstream music? That's pretty much exactly how I felt the first time I listened to "The Matador Singles". One great song after another. Almost all of them under 2 minutes. And with an energy you really don't hear all that often anymore. I have a feeling Jay's sound will be influential down the road, if it hasn't been so already. Who knows what he could have accomplished - but it's clear the music world again lost someone special way too soon.
You will probably notice in the first song I accidentally faded up the next song about halfway through. It was recorded live at Fontana's on January 13th 2010, the day of Jay's death. Well, I can say that alcohol was to blame for the error, and I was going to fix it, but I thought it was a lot more punk rock to leave it in. Enjoy.
